Local Information
Gabriola Island is one of a chain of islands in the Strait of Georgia on the West Coast of British Columbia. This scenic region, known as the Southern Gulf Islands, is located close to Vancouver Island, an area extending from Nanaimo to Victoria.Measuring nearly 50 square kilometers, 18 kilometers long and 4 kilometers wide Gabriola has a permanent resident count of about 6,000. Our unparalleled beauty includes sandy swimming bays, long beaches of weather carved sandstone, oceanview lookouts from rugged sections of high towering rock formations and over 700 acres of trails through dense forested parkland.
We share our island paradise with summer visitors and vacationers, lured here to enjoy cycling, hiking, fishing, kayaking, scuba diving, the fantastic cruising grounds and the abundance of marine wildlife, including reclusive killer whale, gray whale, sea lion, seal, otter and bald eagles. Gabriola is one place you can still pick and eat fresh oyster, mussels and clams.
The diverse business community offers professional services; medical and dental clinics; pharmacy; day care, pre school, alternate and public schools; clothing, hardware, building supply, grocery stores, bakery, library, movie theatre, restaurants, marinas, lodgings, banking, auto fuel/repair, 3 marinas, campground, and golf course.
Community festivals and farmers markets give our many artists and gardeners place to market their wares. No wonder Gabriola is nick named “The Isle of Arts” and “The Queen of the Southern Gulf Islands”.
